Finding Balance: Reflections on Quarter One of 2024

Hey there, lovely readers! It’s been a whirlwind of a year so far, hasn’t it? As I sit down to reflect on the past few months, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment mixed with a hint of exhaustion. Quarter one of 2024 has been a journey of growth, challenges, and unexpected surprises.

Let’s start with the academic front. As a graduate student diving into the world of marriage and family therapy, I’ve completed my first three courses. It’s been fascinating to delve into the intricacies of relationships and human dynamics. What’s even more rewarding is seeing how the techniques I’m learning directly apply to my own life. From communication strategies to conflict resolution, I’ve found myself implementing these skills not only in my relationship but also in my interactions with friends. It’s a constant reminder of the practicality and relevance of what I’m studying.

However, balancing school with work has been a whole different ball game. Transitioning back to a structured routine while navigating a remote work setup has presented its challenges. The lines between work and personal life have blurred, making it difficult to find that elusive work-life balance. But I’m learning to adapt and carve out time for myself amidst the chaos. One thing I’ve realized is the importance of stepping away from my desk and reconnecting with the outside world. Whether it’s going for walks, meeting friends, or discovering hidden gems like the Bedvyne Cocktail bar, these moments of respite have become essential for my well-being.

Discovering Bedvyne Cocktail Bar in Bed-Stuy was a delightful surprise, with their unique green machine tequila drink stealing my heart with each sip. Meeting the inspiring individuals behind “Shoutout to My Therapist” was a true honor, immersing myself in a world of black excellence and creativity. I can’t wait to delve into the show and support their incredible journey.

This Black-owned production, funded by Comcast, is a beacon of representation and storytelling. Season two’s focus on a young Black man’s journey with therapy resonates deeply with me, both personally and professionally. It’s a reminder of the power of media in shaping narratives and breaking down stigma surrounding mental health.

While I adore being home, stepping out to spend time with friends and enjoy the outdoors has been a refreshing change. Incorporating more outdoor walks with my furry companions has been a highlight, despite surviving a flea outbreak (those pups catch everything!). It’s moments like these that remind me of the unpredictability of life. But amidst the chaos, I’ve found joy in pampering my furry companions with homemade meals fit for royalty. They say dogs are a reflection of their owners, and I must say, mine eat better than I do sometimes!

As for my own ventures, my small business has been thriving. From ceramic coasters to wedding items, I’ve been expanding my offerings and finding joy in the creative process. And with plans for quarter two including a trip to Niagara Falls and celebrating my mom’s wedding in Jamaica, there’s a lot to look forward to.

In the midst of it all, I’m learning to prioritize self-care and not succumb to the pressures of overwork. Whether it’s reviving my podcast or simply taking a moment to breathe, I’m committed to finding that delicate balance between ambition and well-being.

So here’s to embracing the challenges, cherishing the victories, and navigating the twists and turns of life with grace and resilience. Here’s to finding balance, one step at a time. Cheers to quarter one, and may quarter two bring even more adventures and blessings.

Until next time,
Ayana B.
